Calcareous Vineyard. Winery with a view. Nestled in the hills off Peachy Canyon Rd is the aptly named Calcareous Vineyards. Calcareous is not on the main highways, so going there takes some determination, but I have taken quite a few folks off the beaten path to astonishing places, such as this. Calcareous is named after the soil it's grapes are grown in. Calcareous soil is soil containing limestone, also known as calcium carbonate. The volcanic soils in the Paso Robles hills contain limestone and other minerals, which hold onto moisturizer. This keeps moisture close enough to the plants roots to make them struggle, and yet flourish. In 2000, a father-daughter team, Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown established Calcareous Vineyards on one of the highest limestone plateaus on Paso Robles west side. The focus is on Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Grape vines that struggle create deeper, and more intricate root systems, which results in a more robust, and sometimes fruit forward grape. Since then, they've won dozen of awards for their rich, flavorful wines. They boast a large wine club, and are open daily. On Wednesdays in the summer (JUne - September) they also have pizza night. It usually goes to around 5 pm to 7:30 pm. For more information on Calcareous, visit them at: http://www.calcareous.com/
